DOVETAIL
A dovetail joint is a strong and secure joint that interlocks two pieces of wood using fan-shaped notches, also known as pins and tails. This jointing technique involves chiseling or cutting the pins and tails in each piece of wood so that they fit together snugly. Dovetail joints have a long history and may be one of the oldest known jointing techniques. The joint is self-locking and does not require any additional hardware to hold it together.
Dovetail joints are commonly used in furniture, cabinets, boxes, and drawer fronts due to their strength and aesthetic appeal. Although mastering the technique of creating a dovetail joint can be challenging, it remains a popular choice among cabinetmakers and carpenters. The joint’s robustness and decorative qualities make it a preferred joint for various woodworking projects.
